Borntohula Sound of 2012

2012-sound

The most important ‘Sound of 2012′ list you’ll find on t’internet! BBC got nowt!

In all honesty it’s the list of bands and artists I want to see do well in 2012. Even if this blog post just gets each band/artist one more fan then I’ll be happy. I’ll surely be seeing them all live this year (if humanly possible), so expect my t-shirt and poster collection to grow to uncomfortable levels.

Gabby Young & Other Animals

2012 is surely THE year for this band. Live performances that are so infectious that a traditional rocker (jeans, band shirt) dresses up smart and wears blue face paint for their NYE live performance (blog post coming soon). New album out in May.

Clean Bandit

Now there’s not much ‘electronica’ in my collection, but I’ve really enjoyed what I’ve heard so far of these guys. A mix of classical with dance (yes my electronic music knowledge is THAT bad). I caught the end of their set whilst supporting the now split Pure Reason Revolution and was curious to find out more. Debut album this year?

Charlene Soraia

I found Charlene’s album Moonchild in the ‘What’s new’ section of Spotify and it’s bloody brilliant. You may have heard her cover of Wherever You Will Go on a tea advert, but it’s easily the worst song due to it not having anywhere near the musical and emotional depth of her own material [and because I'm mostly not bothered about covers]. 2012 tour starts in February.

Michael Kiwanuka

I really enjoyed his performance on Jools Holland as it was great to hear a proper soulful voice. A lot of the modern soul is tiresome whispery cheesy guff, so I’m laying some of my hopes on Michael Kiwanuka opening the door for more artists of his ilk. And really the world needs some proper soul back in the mainstream to put a smile back on its face. 2012 tour starts in February and the debut album in March.

Hot Head Show

This lot confused the heck out of me when I saw them supporting Primus in 2010. Their songs really do take your ears on a little journey. Any band that can produce a song that opens with the line ‘I wasn’t hungry until I saw your sandwich’ will divide people but also deserve recognition in my book. I’m hoping that they do a biggish tour this year.

Pulled Apart By Horses

I literally only found out about this ‘hardcore’ band two days ago on Spotify. Two days you ask and they’re in my list? Well it’s all about hearing something for the first time and putting a smile on your face [They remind me a bit of the Vines before they imploded]. It’s been way too long since I listened to a new rock band that rocked their balls off. As let’s face it rock music has turned into a pathetically wet and fake genre these days. New album Tough Love out in late January and 2012 tour starts in February.

Charles Bradley

I saw Charles at the XOYO and it was an honour to hear someone with that vocal strength and depth in a small venue. A lot of the soul acts being pushed these days are either that whispery fluff, cheesy or sound like bad ripoffs of Motown. This guy is the real deal, so I’m hoping that after the US and Australia tour he’ll be back on UK shores.

My beloved Queens of the Stone Age are supposed to be releasing a new album in 2012. Also looking forward to the new album from Tame Impala.
